I am embarrassed to say that the New Orleans Hornets are one of my favorite teams, but I feel that can change given the recent salary cap moves the team made. The recent trade deadline moves were a wash in my book. Getting rid of the contract Jamal Mashburn and a mediocre player in Rogers for an expiring contract was a stellar move on New Orleans part. If the team was to give Baron Davis away like they did then why didn’t they give him to an Eastern Conference team? Worst of all, how come the team didn’t get a small forward for him or even a draft pick?
The best thing this team can do is rest players like J.R. Smith, Dan Dickau, Speedy Claxton, and Jamaal Magloire in order to keep them healthy, develop more of their players, and fight for a better lottery pick.
A losing season this year has hopefully helped the team in the long run. With a lottery pick and a very early second round pick it won’t be a reach to say that this team can draft 2 future stars. The least those draft picks can do is provide bench help. If the team can land a high profile forward like Antoine Walker, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Donyell Marshall, re-sign Dan Dickau, and get some shooting guard depth which wont be hard because of the glut of them in this years market then it wont be hard to say that this team can compete next year in what is easily the leagues hardest division.
San Antonio here we come.
